Our verdict

Four decades of iteration have left the MK25 platform with a very specific advantage: a simple balanced piston mechanism that outflows almost everything and is easier to maintain than the diaphragm alternatives. Environmental sealing makes it credible in cold water and silt; the 200 m certification makes it credible for technical work. Accept the weight and the price and there is very little to argue with.

The MK25 EVO is a balanced piston first stage, and its defining trait is that the design is over-balanced: as ambient pressure rises, intermediate pressure rises slightly with it. In practice, breathing effort does not degrade on a deep or hard-working dive, which is precisely when a regulator's weaknesses normally surface. The large diameter piston bore backs that up with high volume flow. Certification runs to 200 m, well past recreational limits, which is why the platform keeps appearing on technical divers' manifolds.

Environmental sealing is the second half of the argument. The sealed construction keeps water, sand and ice-forming moisture away from the mechanism, which is what allows the MK25 EVO to work in cold-water wrecks, caves and high-altitude lakes without free-flowing. Port arrangement is generous enough that a technical or sidemount rig routes cleanly, with primary, octopus, inflator, drysuit and gauge hoses all finding sensible angles. Scubapro offers both DIN at 300 bar and yoke, so the same first stage travels between fill standards.

The costs are honest ones. At around 1090 g in yoke configuration it is heavier and bulkier than a diaphragm first stage, and it is not the regulator to build a carry-on travel kit around. The sealing kit adds to the price, and the price was already above entry level. Against that, chrome-plated marine-grade brass survives years of salt exposure, the balanced piston design has fewer moving parts to fail, and Scubapro's service network is among the widest in diving. It pairs naturally with the G260, S620 Ti and A700 second stages.
