Our verdict

This is the Apeks most divers should actually buy. It keeps the sealed first stage, the over-balanced behaviour at depth and the adjustable venturi from the XTX200, drops some weight and a lot of price, and gives up little a recreational diver will notice. The purge button is stiff for smaller hands, and the yoke version rules out DIN-only high-pressure cylinders.

The XTX50 runs the same fundamental architecture as Apeks' flagship: an over-balanced diaphragm first stage, environmentally sealed. Over-balanced means intermediate pressure rises slightly as you descend, so airflow strengthens where demand is highest instead of tightening. Sealed means silt, sand and near-freezing water never reach the mechanism, which is why the regulator holds up below 4°C where unsealed designs risk free-flow. Depth rating is 50 m, which covers the recreational envelope completely.

The second stage borrows the XTX200's housing design at around 850 g, with a pneumatically balanced valve that keeps breathing effort low as tank pressure drops toward the end of a dive. An adjustable venturi lever and an inhalation resistance knob give real control — useful when finning into current or when you want the regulator calmed down at the surface. The exhaust tee is shaped to move bubbles out of the field of view, which matters for photography and for anyone following a buddy closely.

Construction mixes chrome-plated brass with durable thermoplastic to balance longevity against weight, and Apeks' parts network makes servicing easy nearly everywhere. Two limitations are worth planning around. Divers with smaller hands consistently report the purge button feels stiff, so try it before committing. And if you buy the A-clamp yoke version you cannot use DIN-only high-pressure cylinders, which turn up on technical fills and at some European operations — buy the DIN version with an adapter if you travel.
